Youku
Alibaba owns the Youku platform. It’s sometimes referred to as the Chinese YouTube, and has become one of China’s most popular websites. Among its diverse content are videos from games, news, TV shows, and movies. Originally, Bilibili was just a website for anime fans, allowing them to watch anime episodes without ads. Over the past year, however, it has expanded its offerings to include Chinese movies and TV shows, and is now one of China’s fastest growing websites.
The Ifvod app is available on both the Apple App Store and Google Play. Users can browse through hundreds of channels from movies to television shows. Unlike many other streaming services, IFvod offers an app to watch television shows and movies from all platforms. You can access multiple channels at once, making it the perfect streaming platform for multiple devices. It is also available in more than 90 languages and works on most platforms.
Youku and Tudou merged their services in a 100% stock-for-stock merger, forming the largest video website in China. Combined revenues from Youku and Tudou topped two billion Chinese yuan in the first half of 2015, but Youku failed to earn profits for investors. Therefore, Alibaba and Tudou agreed to buy Youku Tudou, Inc., a member of the Alibaba Group.
As a result, Xiaomi is also looking at investing in the online video industry, partnering with Youku-Tudou to develop content and technology. The companies will license existing content from Youku Tudou, and invest in production and distribution of new movies. Combined, the two companies will have over 500 million monthly users, with eight hundred million video views daily. It’s estimated that Xiaomi is currently amidst 85 million users of its MIUI mobile operating system.
In January 2010, Youku announced four new partnerships with leading OTT companies, including Huawei Technologies, ZTE 9 Network Technology, Jiuzhou Electronic Technology, and iFvod. All four partnerships include the pre-installed Youku Tudou TV application. These partnerships allow Youku to offer a richer experience for users than standard TV apps. Youku’s smart TV hardware partners have preinstalled the Youku Tudou app on their devices, which makes it a viable option for users.
YouTube and Youku Tudou are focusing on creating original content, while the other two focus on premium television. YouTube has already secured rights to the National Football League, Sesame Street, and Thomas the Tank Engine. In addition to this, Youku became the exclusive online video marketing platform in China for the Marvel collection of movies and TV series. Disney and Marvel have also made deals with Youku, making it even harder to break even.
